Poljokan’s Park in Banja Luka, likely due to its location, never gained the popularity of Petar Kočić Park or Mladen Stojanović Park. The park is situated above the Mahdibegija Mosque, between the city center and Šeher (now known as Srpske Toplice), near the Kosmos company.

The park was named after Đorđe Poljokan, a well-known philanthropist and industrialist from Banja Luka. Đorđe Poljokan was a significant figure in the 19th century, recognized for his contributions to the city’s development through various donations and initiatives aimed at improving urban life and infrastructure in Banja Luka.

Throughout its history, the park has undergone various phases and changes. In the past, it was known for its neatness, floral pathways, and as a popular gathering spot for young people in Banja Luka.

During World War II, in 1944, a partisan hospital was located in the area of the park. Although no documents confirming the existence of the partisan hospital have been found, conversations with some Banja Luka residents suggest that it was likely a temporary hospital during the attempted liberation of Banja Luka in 1944. This interesting detail was shared by Agnes Rakočević, who was born in that partisan hospital.

After World War II, Poljokan’s Park served as a camp for young people participating in youth work actions in Banja Luka during the 1970s. It provided a space for rest and recreation after the demanding workdays. A large number of young people from across socialist Yugoslavia took part in these work actions, contributing to various projects in the spirit of solidarity and collective development.

Today, Poljokan’s Park faces various challenges. Some areas of the park are neglected and require thorough renovation. Urbanization has also taken its toll, leading to a reduction of the park’s size. However, the park remains an important place for rest and recreation, as well as a symbol of Banja Luka’s cultural and natural heritage. It is hoped that the city authorities will take steps to revitalize the park, restoring its former beauty and significance for the citizens of Banja Luka.
